Beginner Quilting Supplies: What You Actually Need (and What You Don’t)
Starting quilting can feel… expensive and overwhelming fast. Walk into any quilt shop and suddenly you “need” 47 tools 😅
Good news? You don’t.
Here’s a simple, no-fluff guide to the supplies you actually need to get started — and what you can skip (for now).
🧵 The Essentials (Start Here)
1. Fabric (of course 😉)
- Quilting cotton is your best friend
- Start with pre-coordinated bundles (fat quarters or curated kits = less stress)
👉 Pro tip: Choosing fabrics that already work together saves beginners from frustration
2. Rotary Cutter + Cutting Mat
- Cleaner, faster, more accurate than scissors
- 45mm rotary cutter = standard go-to
- Self-healing mat protects your table
3. Acrylic Ruler
- Helps you cut straight lines (aka sanity saver)
- 6” x 18” is a great starter size
4. Sewing Machine
- You don’t need anything fancy
- Straight stitch = 90% of quilting
5. Thread
- Go with a good-quality cotton or poly thread
- Neutral colors (white, gray) = versatile
6. Pins or Clips
- Holds layers together while sewing
- Clips are beginner-friendly and less stabby 😆
❌ What You DON’T Need (Yet)
🚫 Every specialty ruler
There are… a lot. You don’t need them right away.
🚫 Fancy sewing machine upgrades
Walking feet, quilting feet, etc. — nice later, not now.
🚫 200 fabric choices
Too many options = decision paralysis
Start simple, then expand
🚫 Pre-cutting everything perfectly
Perfection is not required to make something beautiful
💡 Optional (Nice to Have Later)
- Iron + ironing board (or pressing mat)
- Fabric marking tools
- Quilting gloves
- Design wall (or… a blank wall works just fine)
🌿 Final Thoughts
Quilting doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful.
Start small. Keep it simple. Let yourself learn as you go.
And remember — your first quilt isn’t supposed to be perfect… it’s supposed to be yours 💛
